#WhyWeLoveLHS

In this Weekly Challenge, we asked students and staff to answer the question “what do you love and/or miss about Liberty?” and to use the hashtag “WhyWeLoveLHS.  You can share your thoughts in the comments below and we will post them on the blog and on the LHS IG account!
Here are what some students and staff had to say:
Ms Belshaw
I miss “Good morning, Patriots. Please stand for the pledge….”  #WhyWeLoveLHS

Mrs. Olsson
It is difficult to put into words how upside down this world is right now.  In my lifetime I have not seen anything like it.  One of the things I miss most is sitting at the front desk of the library watching kids working on homework and interacting with each other.  I am literally going through withdrawals over not being able to recommend books to LHS students.  Please email me for recommendations!!  You can always get eBooks through KCLS.  I can help you do that too!  Please, help me out here! o#WhyWeLoveLHS

Mr Kinsley
I had to go into school to do a few tasks that needed to be done. One for a staff member who needed to be able to access the parking lot and one to have the necessary things needed for when we start back up again. Those tasks took me about 15 minutes. I found myself sitting there almost 2 hours later just sitting in my office doing practically nothing but not able to leave up to that point. I guess I was just sitting there as my mind wandered but I couldn't force myself to get my lazy butt out of my chair, sign out and leave. I've been thinking about that since I finally left yesterday. What was compelling me to sit there and not want to leave? The only thing that I can come up with is that being at LHS, in that building, even without the students and staff that I work for (but 10 fold more when they are there), it's where I feel the safest, most fulfilled and comfortable. Not because it has to do with my job but you kids and staff and that building give me way more than I could ever give back to you in 5 lifetimes.
A few examples: Students find it tedious to have to show their ASB cards every day when leaving for lunch. I love it!! I get to interact and have fun with you( sometimes at your expense😆), show some humor and let you know we're looking out for you even when you may not think so. What was eye opening to me was that so many of you thank me every time that I do it.  Even those who hated it to start with(and may still), show me grace every day with your attitudes. This staff has had my back in some very crucial parts of my life and I wouldn't have survived those things without them.
Joni Mitchell (look her up kids) penned "don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone". There's no lyric ever written that's more true.  These examples are just the tip of the iceberg on why I love LHS.  #WhyWeLoveLHS

Mrs. Benzing
I miss my students! Seeing my students every day is always the highlight of my teaching day. Not being able to see my students and talk to them about how they are doing on a regular basis stinks! My students make my teaching so much more fun and exciting; never a dull moment. I am so excited to be able to go back to our normal schedule and be able to see everyone again. #WhyWeLoveLHS—always the students; they are the heart of our school.

Mrs. Yuen
I've been on a lot of different teams in my lifetime, and the one thing that set the special teams apart was a sense of togetherness and unity.  This is why I love Liberty High School.  As a staff there are a lot of different personalities, but we are all unified in our commitment to pouring our all into our beloved Liberty students.  We may not always agree on what that might look like, however we are 100% together in our heart and in offering our best to give to this school.  Even as we do life from our homes, there is a sense of togetherness and unity in the Liberty High School community, which is why this is one of my favorite teams to ever be on!  Be well Patriots, we got this! #WhyWeLoveLHS

Dhruv N.
What I miss about LHS is getting to see my friends at school and building and fostering connections with each other. It is hard as a part-time extrovert staying home and working on my own but it is a wonderful learning experience for me. #WhyWeLoveLHS

Natalie S.
I particularly love Liberty because of the sense of community that I feel when I’m on campus. It’s rare to find a high school that dedicates so much to including all students and I’m so thankful I have had the opportunity to be apart of that. LHS is filled with individuals that care about us and will do anything to see us succeed. Liberty has become my second home and I wouldn’t of wanted to spend 4 years in any other environment! #WhyWeLoveLHS

Rachel C
I love Lib because of the consist connections you make with people. Wherever you are, whether in class, at lunch, or just walking in the hallways, there’s always an embraced opportunity to talk to someone and grow that relationship even in the smallest way. I feel like this is unique in that it’s a mutual feeling; Lib students want to connect with each other and talk as much as possible. #WhyWeLoveLHS

Cassidy G
I never thought I’d say it but I wish I was back in school right now. Being away from the place I’ve known as my second home for the past four years has been harder than I thought. I feel so lucky to be able to attend a school that provides such a welcoming community. As a freshman I had so many fears coming into a new school, but they vanished as soon as I walked into the open arms of Liberty High School. The culture and spirit we have at Liberty is very unique and it’s what makes kids want to come to school everyday. I love Liberty and i’m very proud to say that I was able to be part of such an amazing community! #WhyWeLoveLHS

Mrs. Klym
What I love most about Liberty are all of the smiles!  Even when I’m having a bad day, I find myself smiling in the hallways because the kids’ faces just have that effect on me! I miss your smiles!!  #WhyWeLoveLHS

Mr. Crowley
I miss Max Moye’s weekend highlights, the Natalie and Makenna franchises, Mr. Roper’s film class engagement-but most of all I miss the positive grind-the day to day will that it takes from staff, students, administrators, and classified folks who make LHS community. #WhyWeLoveLHS #positivegrind

Mr. Martin
What I love most about Liberty High School, and what I am missing the most while we are out, is th energy and camaraderie of the students and staff.  Every day at Liberty, there is an incredibly strong sense of connection and community that is shared by everyone there, and this connection and these interconnected relationships are what I believe truly set us apart from any other school or community.  There is a common purpose, a joy, and alevel of being there for each other that simply cannot be found anywhere else.  Hopefully soon, we will all be able to come back and reconnect in person.  #WhyWeLoveLHS

Mr. Matheny
Liberty. Thank you to everyone for making it a special place!  Best job I've ever had because of the people. #WhyWeLoveLHS

What do we know?

I am  list maker by nature.  As I read through your questions/needs, I started to create a list of what I know to be truth.
  • We know that school is closed until April 27.
  • We know that spring activities, like Spring Fling, the school play, the talent show, club meetings, etc are on hold.  When we return, we will do our best to reschedule the things we can.
  • We know the WIAA has stated that the spring state tournament will occur as planned.  Districts/leagues will work together when we return to determine what the spring season looks like  for our athletes.
  • We know that ASB elections are on hold.  We also know, one way or another, we will have ASB officers next year.
  • We know that the district is providing laptops, hotspots, and food for those in need.
  • We know that teachers are being given direction to communicate  and connect  with students.
  • This direction does change on a weekly basis and we know our community will be patient with staff as we adjust to teaching online.  We are doing the best we can.
  • We know that teachers are instructed to provide learning opportunities to enhance the skills that have been already been taught this school year.  We know teachers cannot provide new content.  We know teachers can work with students to help them improve their current grades (talk to your teacher about make up work or missing assignments!)  We know teachers cannot grade any new work that is done during this time.
  • We know that state testing will not occur.  We know that AP testing will be online.
  • We know our seniors will move on to college and we will celebrate this with them!
  • We know we can sign up for courses for next year by March 25th (check out the counseling website!)
  • We know we need to stay home and take care of our loved ones.  We know we need to discover new ways to keep ourselves occupied.  We know we need to rely on technology even more in order to connect with others.
  • We miss our friends. We miss the LHS staff .  We miss our community.
  • And, we know, as leaders, we are resilient and strong and we can do hard things.

I am going to use this blog as a resource for both 101 and ASB students during our time apart.  It is going to be a place where I will share my thoughts, resources, and leadership opportunities with you as we walk through this unprecedented time in our life.    I welcome your comments and encourage you to be brave and honest with me when you respond.  Only appropriate comments will be shared.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the google forms I sent today.

101 - https://forms.gle/8hWEJdEeVUjuH4bC8

It is my hope that your responses to these questions will provide me with guidance as to how I can best support you in the coming days/weeks/months.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Picture
I know it feels really hard to me to be a leader right now. I would much rather be standing in front of the classroom, laughing and learning with you than sitting at home, trying to figure out what comes next.  I remind myself it is okay for us to not feel okay. It won't always feel this way and none of us are doing this alone.  With so many unanswered questions and uncertainty about the future, it is challenging to be optimistic that we will find a new normal in education. However, I am hopeful we will learn the answers and we will create a new normal.  It is my goal during this time apart to answer your questions to the best of my ability and provide you with activities and opportunities that will enrich your skills as a leader.  It is up to you to decide what you want to do with this time away from school.  You can choose to sit and be bored or you can choose to make the most out of every day by reading a good book, playing a game, putting together a puzzle, pick up a new hobby or FaceTime that friend or family member who needs connection as much as you do.
Be safe and make good choices.
